Academic Relations with Canada
With a view to collecting information on current programs of academic cooperation between Brazilian and Canadian Universities, the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa has asked 47 Canadian institutions about the existence of students/teaching or research staff exchanges with Brazilian Universities, as well as about their effective implementation.
The main goal of the research was to obtain a compilation on existing/operational academic agreements between Brazilian and Canadian institutions and to identify potential interests in broadening or improving such cooperation.
Out of the 47 Canadian institutions consulted, replies from 36 institutions were received . The following areas of cooperation were mentioned: Architecture, Biology and Marine Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Economy, Environmental Science, Law, Literature and Education, Geography, Geology, Medicine and Social Sciences.
The following Brazilian institutions were mentioned in the research: Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Brasileiras, Faculdade da Cidade, Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Fundação Getúlio Vargas de São Paulo, Instituto Agronômico do Paraná, Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Comercial, Universidade de Uberaba, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade de São Paulo, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Universidade Federal de Lavras, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Federal do Piauí, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Centro de Tecnologia Mineral do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade de Brasília, Universidade Cândido Mendes, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana, Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros, Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense, Universidade de Feevale, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Universidade Federal do Maranhão, Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Universidade Federal do Pará, Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná, Universidade Vale do Rio dos Sinos.
A preliminary analysis indicates that the existence of an agreement facilitates but does not guarantee the accomplishment of the exchange. In most cases, the active involvement of a member or a group of members of the teaching/research staff in the promotion of the exchange of activities is a decisive factor in the effective implementation of a program.
Two cases of academic cooperation deserve a differentiated mention, namely the Centre for Studies and Researches of Brazil (CERB) of UQAM and the Visiting Research Chair in Brazilian Studies of the Universities of York, Western Ontario, Calgary and UQAM. The first was set up in 2000 with the aim to consolidate the relationship between UQAM and various Brazilian institutions and to promote academic exchange. The visiting chair was launched in 2003 by the Universities of York, Western Ontario, Calgary and UQAM and sponsors twice a year a two-week series of seminars and talks in Canada by a Brazilian Professor on current issues of Brazil’s economic, political and social reality.
