the Island of Honey is an ecological haven situated in Paranaguá Bay.
It is 2.5 miles from the mainland and offers a rich collection
of flora and fauna to create a setting that is unique in Brazil,
with semi-wild beaches such as Limoeiro, Brasília, Praia
do Miguel and Praia de Fora. There is a village on the island
at Fortaleza Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres (or Fortaleza da Barra),
and a fort built in 1767 at the instigation of King José,
of Portugal, to protect the bay. Erected in 1872 on the orders
of the Emperor Pedro II to guide sailors in Paranaguá Bay,
the Conchas Lighthouse is set on a hill of the same name. Amongst
the island's natural charms is the Enchanted Grotto, a great
rocky wall that has been the inspiration for legends and fantastical
tales.
