Another surprise from Maranhão is Carolina, a town about 850 kilometres from São Luís, in the south of the state. Situated on the banks of the Tocantins River, Carolina is an example of the beauty of the savannah region in Maranhão and a natural retreat, with its waterfalls, grottoes and caves. At Pedra Caída there is a waterfall over 50 metres high surrounded by rocky walls. Near Carolina there is the hill known as Morro das Figuras, where archaeologists have recently discovered various rock inscriptions apparently left by very ancient inhabitants.
