In its Development Plan the state of Amapá has identified
16 areas for this purpose. Among them are Goiabal beach, surrounded
by mangroves and scrub; the Serra do Navio, which affords contrasting
experiences in tropical architecture, ecological conservation and
reforestation; the Santo Antonio Waterfall, 30 meters high and
surrounded by forest; and the beautiful series of interconnected
lakes, home to a great variety of aquatic life and wonderful for leisure fishing.
Flooded meadows, beaches, mangrove swamps, lakes,
savannahs, plains, swathes of tropical forest, transparent green
rivers and an exuberant Amazon Forest make up the State. To the north of the capital, Macapá,
one can witness the phenomenon known as the pororoca, caused by
the meeting of Atlantic Ocean tides with the waters of the river
Araguari; the waters mix with a roar, causing waves of up to five
meters in height. Near the capital is Curiau, lies a refuge (quilombo)
founded by escaped slaves; today, along with Mazagão Velho
and Igarape do Lago, it is one of the principal black communities
of Amapá, where the heritage brought from Africa more than 200 years ago is still preserved.
