Pilar de Goiás is located in the mountains, in Goiás
state, and became rich thanks to a plentiful supply of gold from
the mines. The town grew from being a hiding place for runaway
negro slaves, who formed the Quilombo de Papuã, to prosperity
after the arrival of the bandeirantes. With a history marked by
easy wealth, it inherited piped water schemes, carried out in order
to facilitate the processing of gold bearing ore, and paved surfaces
for its principal streets.
