The source of the Araguaia river is in Aruanã, 310 kilometers
from Goiânia, and the river is one of the principal leisure
attractions in the state of Goiás. When the waters are low,
between July and September, thousands enjoy its fresh water beaches,
its abundant fish, and its tranquil sailing and other water sports.
Further downstream, there are two other towns which become holiday
destinations at this time of the year: Aragarças, 500 kilometers
from Goiânia, and São Miguel do Araguaia, 483 kilometers
away. Fresh water beaches can also be enjoyed along the Paranaíba
river, which is also important for its hydro-electric potential.
One of the most beautiful spots is Três Ranchos, 282 kilometers
from the capital, which used to be a stopover for cattlemen and
is now known for the beauty of Lago Azul (Blue Lake), another place
for water sports. The river also has about 20 islands which are
practically uninhabited.
