Visa Requirements
Note:
1- Visa requirements are subjected to change without notice.

To enter Brazil, any foreigner must have a passport, an international vaccination certificate (if applicable) and a visa issued by a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate. The visa, even when granted, represents only an expectation of the right to enter the country. All visas are issued individually. If more than one traveler is in the same passport, the Embassy will issue separate visas for each of them. Brazilian law does not allow group visas.
The passport must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date and it will be retained by this Embassy during the process period.
Photographs must be recent, passport size, in color or black and white, front view. Snapshots are not accepted.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is requested if the applicant traveled within the last 90 days to Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guyana, Peru and Venezuela. Yellow fever vaccination is advisable if applicant's destination in Brazil includes any of the following States: Acre, Amazonas, Amapá, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins.
Visa will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of Bhutan, Comoros and Taiwan.
Application forms for minors must be signed by both parents. If sent by mail, signatures must be notarized. Minors (under 18) not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s) must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s), together with payment to enable the letter and, if applicable, guardianship document (proof of guardianship is required) to be authenticated by the Embassy.
Processing time: a minimum of TEN (10) WORKING DAYS are required for the visa to be issued, upon presentation of the proper documents at the visa counter. Incomplete or improperly completed applications will cause delay and/or denial of the required visa. At least TEN business days are required for a tourist or business visas submitted by mail or courier.
If the applicant is not resident in Toronto and wants to send the passport and visa application by mail or through a third party, there should always be sent an extra consular fee of CDN$ 18.00 (handling fee) in cash or money order, as well as a self-addressed stamped or prepaid envelope, through a courier which accepts to carry passports (PUROLATOR COURIER IS NOT ACCEPTABLE UNDER ANY CIRCUNSTANCES).
The Embassy of Brazil will not be held responsible for passports sent by mail.
Visa holders must arrive in Brazil within 90 days from the date of issue of their visas.
Tourist and business visas are generally valid for 90 days from the first entry, renewable for another period of up to 90 days by the Brazilian Federal Police. With each entry, the visa holder is granted a stay of 90 days, renewable for an equal period by the Brazilian Federal Police, for a total stay of 180 days per year.

Additional fees:
Please request a stamped receipt upon retrieving your passport if in addition to your visa fee, you have paid:
- handling fee (CDN$ 18.00) if processed by mail or via a third party;
- processing fee (CDN$ 180.00) for American citizens;
- consultation fee (CDN$ 45.00) when applicable.
TOURIST VISAS:
Tourism trip; visit to relatives and/or friends; participation in artistic or amateur sport competitions, whenever no monetary prize or a paid admission is involved.
Requirements:
1. valid passport (for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date) which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. one signed visa application form per applicant ;
3. one recent photograph, passport-size;
4. photocopy of round trip ticket to Brazil or ticket in transit, with flight numbers, dates and itinerary. Instead of a ticket, the Embassy will also accept a signed letter from the carrier or travel agent, on company letterhead, with the name of the vessel (in case of ships), itinerary, dates of arrival in and departure from Brazil.
5. airline employees or persons on standby with open tickets must present tickets with itinerary and an airline ID card (or a signed letter from the airline on company letterhead), with the name of the employee and his/her itinerary.
6. children between 3 months and 6 years of age must have a certificate of vaccination against polio, stating kind and dosage of vaccine.
7. applicants under 18 must present a notarized letter of consent, signed by parents or guardian (with proof of guardianship, in this case).
Consular fee: for Canadian citizens, CDN$ 72.00 in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa. Tourist Visas for American citizens are free of charge, however a processing fee of CDN$ 180.00 applies.
A handling fee of CDN$ 18.00 applies to all applications processed by mail. This handling fee DOES NOT cover postal charges. Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope (sase) or a pre-paid courier slip.
Incomplete applications will be returned to sender upon receipt. If sase is not enclosed with the application it will be kept pending until claimed.
Some nationalities may require consultation with Brazil. In that case, please allow a minimum of one month for the visa to be processed. A consultation fee of CDN$ 45.00 is applicable.
Tourist visa requirements have been waived for citizens of Andorra, Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Morocco, Monaco, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Trinidad & Tobago, Uruguay, Vatican, Venezuela.
TEMPORARY VISAS:
Cultural Visas:
May be granted to lecturers at conferences, researchers, teachers and participants in cultural/ scientific missions (the services provided must not be paid by organizations/ corporations established in Brazil, except for per-diem allowance), and to athletes under 21 who participate in training programs in Brazil.
For participants in scientific expeditions, or those operating in indian reservations, an authorization is required from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), or from the National Foundation for Indigenous People (FUNAI). The visa can only be issued after the authorization has been granted.
For medical doctors and dentists participating in assistential missions in Brazil, authorization is required from the corresponding Regional Council of Medicine or Odontology. The visa will only be issued after the authorization is granted.
As some temporary cultural visas to Brazil depend on prior approval of the Brazilian Immigration services, the application should be submitted 6-8 weeks before the intended date of departure.
General Requirements:
1. valid passport (for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date) which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. two visa application forms filled out and signed by the applicant (official forms supplied by the Embassy);
3. two recent photographs, passport-size, front view;
4. letter of invitation from the Brazilian institution, stating the purpose and duration of the trip;
5. proof of means of financial support;
For visas longer than 90 days, a Police Clearance letter from the Police Department in the area of applicant’s residence.
Visa fee: CDN$ 108.00 in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

Business Visa:
For business trips, including media coverage or filming and for flight/ship crew members not holding an international crew card. For services under a consulting or technical assistance contract and for persons working aboard cruise ships, see WORK VISA.
If the filming expedition is intended for reasons other than journalism or news gathering, issuing the visa depends on prior authorization from the Ministry of Culture in Brazil. For such, the applicant must find a Brazilian co-producer who shall obtain that authorization.
Requirements:
1. passport, valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. one visa application form per applicant;
3. one passport-size photo;
A letter on company letterhead, addressed to the Embassy, signed by an authorized representative (other than the applicant) stating the purpose of the trip to Brazil, itinerary, business contacts, dates of arrival in and departure from Brazil. The letter should also confirm that the company assumes all financial responsibility for the applicant while in Brazil.
Visa fee: CDN$ 108,00 in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

Temporary Visa III:
For travelers under contract for artistic or athletic/sports performance in Brazil or whenever a paid admission is involved.
Procedures:
1. in Brazil, submission of contract directly to the Brazilian Ministry of Labor ("Coordenação de Imigração") for the necessary approval.
2. in Canada, once obtained the approval, submission to the Embassy of one visa application form per applicant, properly filled out (front and back) and signed (parents must sign for those under 18), together with a valid passport and one recent passport-size photo.
Visa fee: CDN$ 72.00 per visa in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

Student Visa:
For full-time students (except post-graduate) duly enrolled at a Brazilian university, institute or technical school.
Requirements:
1. valid passport which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. two visa application forms filled out and signed by the applicant (official forms supplied by the Embassy);
3. two recent photographs, passport-size;
4. proof of enrollment or vacancy (official document issued by the school in Brazil);
5. proof of means of financial support or of scholarship from a sponsoring institution;
6. Police clearance letter (if applicant is over 16), issued by the Police Department in the area where applicant has resided for the last 12 months;
7. If the applicant is less than 18, notarized letter of consent from both parents, authorizing applicant to travel unaccompanied to and from Brazil.
Visa fee: CDN$ 72.00 per visa in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.
Note: Visa applicants must make sure to receive one application form back with their passports. This form will be required by the Brazilian Federal Police within 30 days after arrival for register purposes.

Temporary Work Visa:
This Visa is applied for in Brazil at the General Coordination for Immigration of the Ministry of Labor (see address below) by the prospective employer, who will inform the applicant of the documents required according to the specific type of contract. Once the contract has been authorized, the Embassy will be notified and the visa can then be issued through the presentation of the following documents:
1. passport valid for at least six months which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. two recent photographs;
3. two visa application forms;
4. police clearance;
The fee is CDN$ 180.00 plus handling fee or processing fee when applicable (see Visa Eligibility above).
Technical Assistance:
As per Normative Resolution 34/99 of the National Council for Immigration, persons rendering technical assistance to companies in Brazil should apply for a Temporary V Visa in Brazil at the General Coordination of Immigration of the Ministry of Labor (addresses and telephone numbers indicated below).
Exceptionally, in cases of real emergency, where unforeseen circumstances intervene, the Consular authority might grant that type of visa, valid for thirty days only and not renewable for a period of three months as per the text of article #5 of the said legal text, which reads (unofficial translation): "In cases of emergency, at the discretion of the consular authority, the temporary visa foreseen in item V of article 13 of Law 6.815, of August 19th 1980, may be granted once only in a period of three months to the same alien, valid for thirty days , non renewable, eschewing the formalities herein set forth."
This type of visa also applies for voluntary social work. Persons working aboard cruise ships should also apply for a Work Visa with the Ministry of Labor in Brazil.
The consular fee for this type of visa is CDN$ 180,00 in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

Social Assistance:
As per Normative Resolution # 47, of May 16th 2000, published on May 22nd 2000, a Temporary work visa (V) shall be requested at the Embassy for persons going to Brazil for voluntary work with Religious or Social Assistance Organizations in Brazil. In addition to the general requirements (see Visa Eligibility), this visa specifically requires the presentation of the following original documents:
1. Letter of Invitation from the Organization in Brazil, stating the condition of voluntary (no remuneration whatsoever shall be paid).
2. Document characterizing the place where services will be lent and description of the activities that shall be performed.
3. Affidavit from the Organization in Brazil pledging responsibility for the financial support of the candidate and his/her return to the country of origin (Canada) upon completion of the mission.
4. Proof of Health insurance valid in Brazil (copy of original policy or detailed receipt proving purchase of such insurance. Letters from travel agents shall not be accepted).
5. Record of Constitution of the Organization in Brazil, such as any one of the following two: Social Statute or Records of designation of the current Board of Directors.
6. Proof of the registration of the Organization in the corresponding Council of Social Assistance (National, state, municipal or of the Federal District, accordingly).
7. Proof that the Organization is functioning regularly.
8. Written Official Statement from the organization appointing the applicant for the designated mission as a volunteer, signed by a duly authorized representative.
9. Police report showing that the candidate has no criminal records.
Temporary Visa VI:
Eligibility: media correspondents transferred to Brazil.
Requirements and procedure:
Submission directly to the Press Office ("Assessoria de Imprensa") of the Ministry of External Relations of a letter by the sponsoring organization, on its letterhead, specifying the nature of the job to be performed and the duration of the contract, as well as proof of full financial responsibility during his/her stay in Brazil.
Once the application is approved, the applicant must submit to the Embassy two visa application forms per applicant, filled out and signed, as well as the following documents:
1. passport (must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date) which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period;
2. two recent photographs, passport-size;
3. Police clearance letter (from applicant over 18), issued by the Police Department in the area where the applicant has resided for the last 12 months;
If the applicant presents the form in person, there is a visa fee of CDN$ 180.00 per visa, payable in money order or cash to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

Religious Missionaries Visa:
For religious missionaries, members of the clergy and of monastic orders, temporarily transferred to Brazil.
(A) Requirements from the religious order in Brazil:
1. Official records of constitution and respective statutes;
2. Duly constituted authority by the religious official representing the order;
3. Written statement of financial responsibility for the applicant and his/her family in Brazil.
All documents listed above must be duly notarized in Brazil and all photocopies likewise authenticated.
(B) Requirements from the applicant:
1. proof of ordination or equivalent and/or school transcript of theological education in an institution of higher learning;
2. copy of diplomas;
3. curriculum vitae indicating academic and missionary history;
4. marriage certificate and birth certificate of minor dependents, if applicable.
Note: Documents listed in items 1 through 4 must be duly legalized by the Embassy in the jurisdiction of which they were issued.
5. declaration stating that will work in Indian areas only after a permit issued by FUNAI (Fundação Nacional do Indio).
Note: a photocopy of item 5 must be authenticated by the Embassy.
6. a photocopy of each family member’s passport (must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date);
7. three visa application forms filled out and signed by each family member (official forms supplied by the Embassy);
8. three recent photos, passport-size for each applicant.
9. police record.
The applicant must submit to the Embassy the passport of each family member.
Visa fee: CDN$ 126.00 in cash or money order payable to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa. Legalization fees: school documents, CDN$ 9.00; other documents, CDN$ 36.00; authentication (of copy), each, CDN$ 9.00, when photocopied at our office, CDN$ 27.00 when photocopied elsewhere.

PERMANENT VISAS:
Permanent visas may be granted to individuals intending to establish residence in Brazil. Applicants must have been a resident of the provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut for the last 12 months to be able to apply through this Embassy.
Prospective applicants must fit into one of the categories listed below:
1. Technicians or professionals with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment;
2. Professors, technicians and high level researchers who wish to immigrate to Brazil to undertake research work in an institution of higher learning or of research in science and technology.
3. Foreign investors with initial transfer of foreign capital equivalent to no less than US$ 200.000.00 and an investment plan pre-approved by the Brazilian National Council on Immigration (CMIG).
4. Administrators, managers or directors hired by a commercial enterprise or civil organization resulting from foreign investment described in item 3 above, with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment;
5. A retired person, sixty (60) years of age or older, accompanied by up to two dependents, and able to transfer monthly, in accordance with the laws of the country of origin, the amount equivalent to US$ 2,000.00. In the case of more than two dependents, the applicant must transfer the amount equivalent to US$ 1.000.00 for each additional dependent.
6. Spouse, or minor dependent of Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil;
7. Ascendants of a Brazilian national or of a permanent resident of Brazil;
8. Siblings of a Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil, if orphan, single and under 18 years of age;
9. Minor children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren of a Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil.
Further requirements are applicable to each class of applicant, details of which may be supplied by the Embassy, on demand.
Family Reunion:
Applicants for Permanent Visa for the purpose of family reunion must submit the following documents to the Embassy:
(A) Required from the applicant:
1. certified photocopy of passport (must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date);
2. three visa application forms filled out and signed by the applicant (official forms supplied by the Embassy)
3. three recent photos, passport size;
4. birth certificate or, if sponsored by spouse, marriage certificate; if sponsored by parent, grandparent, sibling or offspring, submit birth certificate and proof of blood relationship;
5. Police clearance letter (if applicant is over 18), issued by the Police Department in the area where the applicant has resided for the last 12 months;
6. proof of residence within the Embassy's jurisdiction (Ottawa) for the last 12 months;
7. If the applicant is head of family, proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary.
(B) Required from sponsor:
1. photocopy of Brazilian ID card;
2. photocopy of CIC or CPF card (issued by the Brazilian Revenue Service).
3. voter identification card (not applicable if the sponsor is not a Brazilian citizen);
4. proof of latest submission of income tax forms to the Brazilian Revenue Service or proof of exemption;
5. if the sponsor is head of family, proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary;
6. legalized affidavit pledging to provide support and livelihood to applicant while in Brazil.
With the exception of items 2 and 3 of (A) above, any document issued abroad must be legalized (originals) or authenticated (copies) by the Brazilian Embassy in the jurisdiction of which they were issued.
The documents are submitted to the appreciation of the Brazilian Immigration services, whose response usually arrives in 30 days. After the Embassy has been authorized to issue the visa, the applicant must submit again his/her passport and pay the visa fee.
Consular fees for related services: permanent visa, CDN$ 360.00 per person; legalization of school documents, CDN$ 9.00; legalization of other documents: CDN$ 36.00; authentication of copy of document: CDN$ 9.00. Payable in cash or money order to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.
