O Cangaceiro (1953)
The Bandit
For a long time, the only visiting card which the Brazilian cinema could present internationally. With this "western" produced by the Vera Cruz studio, premiered in the Cannes Film Festival under the category of "adventure film" and distributed worldwide by Columbia Picture, the bandits of the Sertão, the dry ranch land of N.E. Brazil, achieved their legendary place on the screen. In spite of being strongly influenced by John Ford and Akira Kurosawa, Lima Barreto managed to create a real Brazilian saga, cradled in the songs and dances of the Sertão.
