Please take notice of the jurisdiction of each Consular Office when forwarding your application (visa and tourism information, as well as download of the necessary visa request forms, are available online). The Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa only processes visas required by residents of the National Capital Region, except tourist and business applications submitted in person by residents of other regions. Applications received by mail or by courier from outside the jurisdiction of the Embassy will be returned to the sender.

Method of payment
All consular fees must be paid by certified cheque or money order.
BUT PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: CHEQUES AND MONEY ORDERS WILL HAVE DIFFERENT BENEFICIARIES DEPENDING ON WHERE THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED.

The visa is valid for first entry within 90 days
The return of processed documents by mail will only be made through the prepaid services offered by Canada Post (Registered Mail, Express Post and Priority Courier). The interested party will be entirely responsible for choosing each the above mentioned services. The use of any other express courier companies is thoroughly forbidden.
GENERAL VISA REQUIREMENTS
Note:
1- Visa requirements are subjected to change without notice.
2- Incomplete applications will be immediately returned to sender.
3- No information regarding status of visa applications will be given either by phone or e-mail during the processing period.

To enter Brazil, any foreigner must have a passport, an international vaccination certificate (if applicable) and a visa issued by a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate. The visa, even when granted, represents only an expectation of the right to enter the country. All visas are issued individually. If more than one traveler is in the same passport, the Embassy will issue separate visas for each of them. Brazilian law does not allow group visas.
The passport must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date and it will be retained by this Embassy during the process period. It must have at least two blank pages available.
Photographs must be recent, passport size, in color or black and white, front view. Snapshots are not accepted.
Visa will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of Bhutan and Taiwan.
Application forms for minors must be signed by both parents. If sent by mail, signatures must be notarized. Minors (under 18) not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s) must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian(s), together with payment to enable the letter and, if applicable, guardianship document (proof of guardianship is required) to be authenticated by the Embassy.
Processing time: a minimum of EIGHT (8) WORKING DAYS are required for the visa to be issued, upon presentation of the proper documents at the visa counter. Incomplete or improperly completed applications will cause delay and/or denial of the required visa. At least ELEVEN business days are required for a tourist or business visas submitted by mail or courier.
If the applicant is a resident of the National Capital region but wants to send the passport and visa application by mail or through a third party, there should always be sent an extra consular fee of CDN$ 12.00 (handling fee) in certified check or money order, as well as a self-addressed stamped or prepaid envelope.
The return of processed documents in the Canadian territory will only be made through the prepaid services offered by Canada Post (Registered Mail, Express Post and Priority Courier). The interested party will be entirely responsible for choosing each the above mentioned services. The use of other express courier companies is thoroughly forbidden.
The Embassy of Brazil will not be held responsible for passports sent by mail.
Visa holders must arrive in Brazil within 90 days from the date of issue of their visas.
Tourist and business visas are generally valid for 90 days from the first entry, renewable for another period of up to 90 days by the Brazilian Federal Police. With each entry, the visa holder is granted a stay of 90 days, renewable for an equal period by the Brazilian Federal Police, for a total stay of 180 days per year.

Please request a stamped receipt upon retrieving your passport if in addition to your visa fee, you have paid:
- handling fee (CDN$ 12.00) if processed by mail or via a third party;
- processing fee (CDN$ 156.00) for American citizens;
- consultation fee (CDN$ 30.00) when applicable.
PERMANENT VISAS
Permanent visas may be granted to individuals intending to establish residence in Brazil. Applicants must have been a resident of the Ottawa region to be able to apply through this Embassy.
Prospective applicants must fit into one of the categories listed below:
1. Technicians or professionals with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment;
2. Professors, technicians and high level researchers who wish to immigrate to Brazil to undertake research work in an institution of higher learning or of research in science and technology.
3. Foreign investors with initial transfer of foreign capital equivalent to no less than US$ 50.000.00 and an investment plan pre-approved by the Brazilian National Council on Immigration (CMIG).
4. Administrators, managers or directors hired by a commercial enterprise or civil organization resulting from foreign investment described in item 3 above, with a work contract pre-approved by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor, National Department of Employment;
5. A retired person, sixty (60) years of age or older, accompanied by up to two dependents, and able to transfer monthly, in accordance with the laws of the country of origin, the amount equivalent to US$ 2,000.00. In the case of more than two dependents, the applicant must transfer the amount equivalent to US$ 1.000.00 for each additional dependent.
6. Spouse, partners in a common law union regardless of gender, or minor dependent of Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil;
7. Ascendants of a Brazilian national or of a permanent resident of Brazil;
8. Siblings of a Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil, if orphan, single and under 18 years of age;
9. Minor children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren of a Brazilian citizen or of a permanent resident of Brazil.
As far as the categories (1) to (4) are concerned, the visa must be applied for in Brazil. Once it has been authorized, the Embassy will be notified and the visa can then be issued through the presentation of the following documents:
1. Passport valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date. It must have at least two blank pages available;
2. Two visa application forms filled out and signed by the applicant (official forms supplied by the Embassy);
3. Two recent photos, passport size.
Further requirements are applicable to each class of applicant, details of which may be supplied by the Embassy, on demand.
Family Reunion (categories 6 to 9 above):
Applicants for Permanent Visa for the purpose of family reunion (items must submit the following documents to the Embassy:
(A) Required from the applicant:
1. certified photocopy of passport (must be valid for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date. It must have at least two blank pages available);
2. two visa application forms filled out and signed by the applicant (official forms supplied by the Embassy)
3. two recent photos, passport size;
4. birth certificate or, if sponsored by spouse or common law partner, marriage certificate or document that proves the stable relationship; if sponsored by parent, grandparent, sibling or offspring, submit birth certificate and proof of blood relationship;
5. Police clearance letter (if applicant is over 18), issued by the Police Department in the area where the applicant has resided for the last 12 months;
6. proof of residence within the Embassy's jurisdiction (Ottawa) for the last 12 months;
7. If the applicant is head of family, proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary.
(B) Required from sponsor:
1. photocopy of Brazilian ID card;
2. photocopy of CIC or CPF card (issued by the Brazilian Revenue Service).
3. voter identification card (not applicable if the sponsor is not a Brazilian citizen);
4. proof of latest submission of income tax forms to the Brazilian Revenue Service or proof of exemption;
5. if the sponsor is head of family, proof of employment or of job offer from Brazil, detailing job title, duration of contract and salary;
6. legalized affidavit pledging to provide support and livelihood to applicant while in Brazil.
With the exception of items 2 and 3 of (A) above, any document issued abroad must be legalized (originals) or authenticated (copies) by the Brazilian Consular Office in the jurisdiction of which they were issued.
The documents are submitted to the appreciation of the Brazilian Immigration services, whose response usually arrives in 30 days. After the Embassy has been authorized to issue the visa, the applicant must submit again his/her passport and pay the visa fee.
Procedures for transfer of pension funds (category 5 above)
Submission to the Consular Service of the following documentation (all supporting documentation that is not originated in Brazil must be authenticated by the Consular Service. Copies of Brazilian supporting documents must be notarized by a "Cartório" in Brazil. Original Brazilian documents are not required notarization):
1. Two visa application forms per applicant, properly filled out (front and back) and duly signed (parents must sign for those under 18 years old);
2. Ttwo recent passport-type photos, in color or black and white, front view, full face, light background (snapshots are not accepted)
3. Authenticated copy of the passport pages of identification;
4. as applicable, marriage certificate and/or birth certificate(s);
5. Police clearance letter (if applicant is over 18), issued by the Police Department in the area where the applicant has resided for the last 12 months;
proof of residence in the consular jurisdiction;
6. Certificate issued by official institution attesting to applicant's retirement;
7. Documented proof issued by pension provider of monthly pension income of at least US$2,000.00. In case of a third dependent and over, an additional US$1,000.00 per dependent must be accounted for;
8. Statement issued by an official organization certifying that pension funds can be transferred to Brazil on a monthly basis.
9. Proof of residence within the Embassy's jurisdiction (Ottawa) for the last 12 months;
Consular fees for related services: permanent visa, CDN$ 240.00 per person; legalization of school documents, CDN$ 6.00; legalization of other documents: CDN$ 24.00; authentication of copy of document: CDN$ 6.00. Payable in certified check or money order to the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.
