Temporary Visas I (Cultural) Apply to:
* Researchers.
* Teachers.
* Exchange students.
* Participants in cultural/ scientific missions (the services provided must not be paid by organizations/ corporations established in Brazil, except for per-diem allowance).
* Voluntary workers and to athletes under 21 who participate in training programs in Brazil.
* Participants in scientific expeditions, or those operating in indian reservations. In this case an authorization from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), or from the National Foundation for Indigenous People (FUNAI) is mandatory.
* Participants in scientific expeditions that involve bioprospecting. In this case, an authorization from the Ministry of Environment (MMA) is mandatory.
* Medical doctors and dentists participating in assistential missions in Brazil. In this case an authorization from the corresponding Regional Council of Medicine or Odontology is mandatory.
IMPORTANT: As some temporary cultural visas to Brazil depend on prior approval of the Brazilian Immigration services, the application should be submitted 6-8 weeks before the intended date of departure.
Required documentation
NOTE: Please note that you are fully responsible for the accuracy of the information provided in your application.
1. Valid passport (for at least 6 months prior to its expiration date) which will be retained by this Embassy during the process period. It must have at least two blank pages available.
2. Visa application form per applicant that MUST be filled in online (no need to print it).
3. Printed protocol document issued after filling out the online form. Please sign the protocol document in the appropriate space and glue a photograph (passport size). Please note that the protocol is valid for 1 month (after this period a new application must be made).
NOTE: The photograph can be taken as a courtesy at the Embassy of Brazil upon delivery of the protocol for processing. (temporarily unavailable)
4. Applicants under 18 must present a notarized letter of consent, signed by parents or guardian (with proof of guardianship, in this case).
5. Letter of invitation from the Brazilian institution, stating the purpose and duration of the trip (for exchange students proof of enrollment in an educational institution).
6. All applicants must present proof of earnings (letter of employer or statement of earnings). In case of self employed, student or unemployed, a statement of earnings or a copy of last year’s income tax from spouse or parents is acceptable. For retired, any proof of income can be presented (e.g. pension, rental,…), or a copy of last year’s income tax.
7. Police report showing that the candidate has no criminal records.
8. Additional requirements for voluntary work with religious or social assistance organizations in Brazil (as per normative resolution 68/05):
- Letter of invitation from the organization in Brazil, stating the condition of voluntary (no remuneration whatsoever shall be paid).
- Document characterizing the place where services will be lent and description of the activities that shall be performed.
- Affidavit from the organization in Brazil pledging responsibility for the financial support of the candidate and his/her return to the country of origin (Canada) upon completion of the mission.
- Proof of Health insurance valid in Brazil (copy of original policy or detailed receipt proving purchase of such insurance. Letters from travel agents shall not be accepted).
- Record of constitution of the organization in Brazil: social statute and records of designation of the current board of directors.
- Proof of the registration of the organization in the corresponding Council of Social Assistance or in the Ministry of Justice.
- Proof that the organization is functioning regularly.
- Written official statement from the organization appointing the applicant for the designated mission as a volunteer, signed by a duly authorized representative.
- Document proving the professional experience or qualification of the volunteer regarding to the proposed activities in Brazil.

- All consular fees must be paid by certified cheque or money order payable to Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa.

NOTE: The return of processed documents by mail will only be made through the prepaid services offered by Canada Post (Registered Mail, Express Post and Priority Courier). The interested party will be entirely responsible for choosing one of the mentioned services. The use of any other express courier companies will not be accepted under any circumstance.
Processing period
10 (ten) working days (plus delivery time for applicants applying via mail). Please note that this period may vary and the actual pick up date will be informed by the clerk at the time of visa drop-off.
NOTE: Temporary cultural visas that depend on prior approval of the Brazilian Immigration services might take 6-8 weeks.
IMPORTANT: Visa holders must arrive in Brazil within 90 days from the date of issue of their visas.
